Anyway, today was really great because two of my classmates and I went to have lunch after school, which is always so fun. My school is in a new town and it's so much fun to explore it, especially with my new friends who are on this journey with me! We went to this little Mexican place and just hung out, talked about life, law, and everything in between. and ate some really delicious food. Other than that, it was a normal school week filled with legal things, job fairs at school, and studying. I have been getting some questions about what exactly the "law school life" entails, what I do daily, and how I do it all, so I decided that this blog will be about what my life as a law student is like. Here goes!
I normally wake up at 5:00 a.m. and press snooze for an hour and then finally get out of bed. (Yes, I know it's not good but my body needs to have notice that it is about to have to get up). I get ready for school and give my puppies kisses. I pack my books and computer in my roly bag (yes, a rolly bag,. Those case books are too heavy. Even the guys have them.) and head to the kitchen. I usually make a little bit of coffee, fill up another cup with water or juice, grab a little breakfast to take with me, and get my lunch ready. I give my dogs their meds/vitamins, let them out, kiss their noses again, and I am off. I have a long drive to school and traffic is bad in the town where school is so I have a lot of time in the car.
Once in the car, I say my morning prayers, and then listen to the radio. I also, drink my coffee and listen to recordings that I made of the statutes and laws. When I get to school, It's about 8:00ish. I park in the law school parking lot and get on the shuttle that takes us to the law school. I do have a locker at school, so if I need to put my lunch away and any other things I don't immediately need, I do that. After that, I am running to class.
After classes we have lunch,. Some days it's only an hour. Other day's, it's for three hours. I usually take my lunch up to the stacks and study while I eat. If I sit in the atrium with my classmates, I will only talk and not get any work done. I love the stacks because the stairs are narrow and the ceiling is very low. It feels like you are in a ship. It's kinda creepy but It's a quiet place where I have my own little cubby to do my school work.
After lunch, I have more classes. Some days, we have to go to these "classes" which are not classes. They are required for 1L's and are like study groups with either the professor or the TA's. They are helpful. It gives us a chance to ask questions that we maybe didn't get to ask in class or get clarification on something that we missed. I like them but it makes for really long days. I get out of school at about 4:00 p.m. and take care of anything that needs to be done at school and head home.
When I get home, I prepare dinner, give the pups their night time meds, feed them, kiss their noses, and take a bath. After my bath, I lay out all my books and decide what I need to do. I keep a very detailed planner with my homework schedule. I do any work that my professors have assigned and get to anything that may have not been done that I will need for the next day. I also update my outlines from each class that I had that day. Outlines are basically your study guide that you will use for the final. We only have the final. There are no other tests. If you don't pass the final, you're basically done. It's best to start them early.
This is when I normally pass out. I will be reading and then the next morning I wake up with my books. I know this happens so I try to save the reading that isn't due for a few days for the end of the night reading. That's basically it! That's the life of a typical law student. It's scary and you are always wondering if you're doing it right. There isn't a whole lot of time for much else.
The weekends are nothing but studying from the time I get home on Friday to the time I go to be on Sunday. This is why I value my Friday lunches with friends, my grocery shopping time and Friday naps so much. It's the only time I have a "normal" life. I love law school though and I know this is exactly where I need to be.
Anyway, I took a long nap today and I need to do some school work. I hope you all have a lovely weekend! Let me know if anyone else has any other questions. Until next time...
XOXO
Stay Fabulous,
LawGirl.
